Install Irssi:
apt-get install irssi

Connect to Freenode:
echo '/set real_name = some name' > ~/.irssi/startup; irssi -n some_name -c irc.freenode.net

Other servers:
irc.efnet.ch

Reserve a nickname:
/msg nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL

Identify yourself:
/msg nickserv identify PASSWORD

Join a channel:
/join #linux

Ignore certain types of messages:
/ignore * JOINS PARTS QUITS NICKS MODES

Make your nickname highlighted everyhwere:
/set hilight_nick_matches off
/hilight [nick]

Improve display of names:
/set show_nickmode_empty off

set the timestamp format:
/set timestamp_format %Y-%m-%d %H:%M

Change Nick:
/nick othernick

Quit Irssi:
/quit

Toggle between windows:
CTRL+n

Jump to Window nr 3:
ESC+3

Close a window:
/wc

Auto complete names:
Use the Tab key

Connect via ssl:
1) irssi --config=/home/user/.irssi/your_config
2) /connect -ssl -ssl_verify chat.freenode.net

Make ssl permanent:

1) irssi --config=/home/user/.irssi/your_config

/network add -sasl_username <login> -sasl_password <password> -sasl_mechanism PLAIN freenode
/server add -auto -net freenode -ssl -ssl_verify chat.freenode.net 6697
/save

(You do not need the sasl parameters in the first line. But it's useful as it will automatically log you in upon starting irssi. This only works on irssi 0.8.18 or later.)

Then next time connect:
1) irssi --config=/home/user/.irssi/your_config -c freenet

To see if you are using a secure connection, do /whois <yournick>
